OpenCut is a free CapCut alternative: an open source video editor that runs in the browser, with a multi-track timeline, trimming and splitting, text and captions, effects and transitions, and export, and a Docker Compose file to self-host the whole thing. Your videos never leave your device. It is MIT licensed, and there is no subscription, no paywalled feature and no watermark.

Apps like CapCut without the paywall

OpenCut started because most of CapCut's basic features moved behind a subscription and its terms let it use what you upload. The editor keeps the parts people liked, a simple timeline that anyone can pick up and a layout built for short vertical video as much as for landscape, and leaves out the account wall. Projects and media stay in your browser's storage, processing happens on your machine through FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, and nothing is uploaded to anyone.

A timeline built for short-form video

Drag clips onto a multi-track timeline, trim and split, layer text, captions and stickers over footage, add effects and transitions, and preview as you go. The project calls out timeline work, project management and performance as the areas it is strongest in, and says plainly that the preview panel's fonts, stickers and effects and the export path are being rebuilt on a new rendering approach, so expect those to move between versions.

Self-host it with Docker in ten minutes

This package is release 0.3.0, the last classic release before the project began a ground-up rewrite around a Rust core for web, desktop and mobile. It runs today with one command: docker compose up -d brings up the web app, Postgres and Redis, and the editor is on port 3100. The included .env.example already matches the Compose file. The project runs a hosted version of this same editor as well, so you can try it before you host it.

Open source, no watermark, no subscription

OpenCut is MIT licensed, built by the OpenCut team and a community that has put more than 93,000 stars behind it, and free for good: no monthly fee, no export watermark, no features behind a paywall. The source is yours to change, and the roadmap adds a plugin architecture, an editor API, headless rendering and an MCP server for agents as the rewrite lands.
